Nigeria Is Still Becoming

A letter to Nigeria on Independence Day. October 1, 2026.

Sixty-six years ago today, a flag was raised. Green. White. Green. Simple in its colours,

staggering in what it meant. After decades of organizing, arguing, writing, negotiating, and

refusing to accept that the answer was no, Nigeria became independent. October 1, 1960. The gate broke open and a nation walked through it.

Sixty-six is not a number that invites easy celebration. Nigeria at sixty-six carries real weight. The headlines are heavy. The fears are legitimate. There are Nigerians today who are exhausted in ways that deserve to be named honestly and not papered over with patriotic sentiment that costs nothing to produce. We see them. We hold them.

And yet.

This is a nation that has never run out of people willing to stand. Not in 1953, when a thirty-year-old man stood in a colonial chamber and said the word independence out loud. Not in 1995, when a writer faced a noose and did not recant. Not in every hospital, classroom, market, and community meeting where ordinary Nigerians show up today and do the unglamorous work of holding things together.

Nigeria has never been saved by her government alone. She has always been saved by her people.

Sixty-six years of independence is sixty-six years of a nation deciding, again and again, that the work is worth the effort. The parents raising children with intention in impossible circumstances. The teachers showing up. The young people building businesses from nothing. The journalists writing stories that powerful people do not want told. The dreamers who refuse to leave and the diaspora who refuse to forget. All of them, every single day, are casting a vote for Nigeria's next chapter.

At the KemiGold Foundation, Nigeria is not an abstraction to us. It is the reason we exist. The communities, her children, her potential, are what we show up for. On this day, we do not simply celebrate what Nigeria was. We celebrate what Nigeria is still becoming.

Sixty-six and still standing. Still fighting. Still ours.

Happy Independence Day, Nigeria! 🇳🇬
